Why Girl's Flag Football?

Women's flag football has experienced a surge of popularity in the past few years across North America and globally.  Flag football is catching the attention of athletes who are seeking to expand their athletic opportunities- and potentially their academic opportunities and careers.  While similar to typical football, flag football is played without physical contact emphasizing agility, speed, and strategic game-play.

Without tackling, flag football players are able to demonstrate their athleticism maintaining a focus on team work, integrity, and fair play.  Flag football is serving as a platform for female empowerment and leadership development.  Female flag football players are transforming the athletic landscape, breaking down barriers, and challenging stereotypes.

Despite flag football being around since the 1940's and Canada having a Women's National Team for over 2 decades there has not been an all-girls flag football program offered on the North Shore until now.

Why now?

The 2028 Summer Olympics will introduce the sport of flag football for the first time having events for male and female teams.  Canada's national women's flag football team is among the best in the world.  It's estimated that over 20 million people in 100 countries play flag football.

Meet Our Co-Founders

Married and business partners for over two decades, Christina Currie and Greg Lauer, are the co-founders of North Shore Girls Flag Football in North Vancouver, B.C.

Greg's played American football since his youth and has a fundamental understanding of the positive impact team sports can have on children and young adults.  Greg played football during college for University of Texas on the Texas Longhorns football team.  Years later, with 2 young children, Greg found a new appreciation for team sports and he began volunteering as a coach on his kids' basketball, flag football, and soccer teams in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  Upon relocation to North Vancouver with his family in the Summer of 2022, Greg was quick to find opportunities to resume his volunteer coaching while supporting his children in playing sports while establishing a connection to their new community.

Christina has a track record that includes decades of community-oriented and professional leadership roles.   Her personal and professional experience offers a unique understanding  of the need for young women and girls to  have a physically and emotionally safe environment in which to learn, grow, and imagine themselves as empowered adults.  In 2024,  alongside their pre-teen daughter Greg and Christina identified the need for an all-girls flag football team on the North Shore to ensure that young girls have the opportunity to unlock their potential in an environment that is safe, fun, and will promote their mental and physical well-being.    North Shore Girls Flag Football was founded in 2024 with inaugural programming to begin in Summer 2025.

Christina and Greg reside in North Vancouver with their two children.
